“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Letting go of the past can sometimes be easier said than done. It can be especially challenging if
Letting go of the past is almost impossible if you haven't fully surrendered everything to the Father. There may be something that happens to you that may trigger a hurt from your past...something you thought you let go of.
- you haven't fully surrendered everything to the Father,
- if you are hindered by others opinion of you,
- if you don't realize or see the regeneration taking place within yourself,
- if you don't know what God has purposed for you to be or do,
- and if you take your focus off God and the fact He has forgiven YOU.
Letting go of the past is almost impossible if you haven't fully surrendered everything to the Father. There may be something that happens to you that may trigger a hurt from your past...something you thought you let go of.
There may be things that you had forgotten about or suppressed in your subconscious. An event may happen in the present to pull off the scab of an unhealed wound, you may begin to hurt again as if it just happened. The wound may never have healed properly and the scab removal exposes the wound. Don't remove scabs to expose unhealed wounds. Don't pick at old stuff, either. Rather, dress the wound/scar and let the healing process begin.
Meaning, there may have been something very tumultuous to happen in a relationship/friendship to hurt you very much. This hurt, you may have thought was healed. You find out quickly, once the "scab" has been removed that the wound was not really healed. You had not really "gotten over" what happened. Rather than expose the wound any further, you dress the wound with "ointment" and cover with a bandage. The "ointment and bandage" consist of love, forgiveness, cleansing, praying, and grace.
Letting go of your past may also be hindered by others opinion of you. Don't fall for the trap of holding on to junk. People may often remind you of how you "used" to be. They are confounded by the change God has made in you. They may not believe the transformation is real. Show them by your actions. Show by your love that your regeneration in Christ is the real deal. They may try you. They may tempt you. They may wrongly accuse you and say all sorts of slanderous things about you. It may hurt. You may cry. Love them despite of what they do and pray for them and keep your focus on God. Let Him lead you. Let Him Comfort you. Let Him keep you.

If you haven't seen the transformation taking place in your life, (all things becoming new) you should take a closer look. Have you grown in your walk? If you have, what changes do you see? If you haven't seen growth in your walk, why not? Is there a stumbling stone set before you? Do you seek to grow more in the Word? If you find yourself more cognizant of the Holy Spirit, you are in a good place. If not, you are in a great place to begin seeking God's presence in your life.
Growth. If it is taking place in the life of a believer, keep up the excellent job. You must know by now that Satan seeks to destroy you. Don't take your eye off the Most High. Seek refuge in Him. When the enemy comes in to devour you, run to our Heavenly Father. Never take on the fight with the enemy alone. Always seek counsel from our Heavenly Father. If He says fight, then you fight on. Should He tell you to not fight, don't fight. Know that, whatever He instructs you, the victory is His.
Do you know what God's purpose and plans are for your life? Do you know if you are headed on the right road to where He wants you to be? Have you even taken time to ask our Heavenly Father what your purpose is? If it turns out that you are in fact walking in the calling in which you have purposed, kudos to you. May the Most High continue to be with you, lead and guide you in your ways. Should you not be walking in your purpose, what hinders you from being what God has purposed for you to be?
If you need to make a list of all the things hindering you from being what God has ordained for you to be, do so. It is important to always walk the way He wants us to walk and to follow His commands. Life could be much more rewarding should we chose to walk in the path He has chosen for us. It is pleasant to walk in the way He would have us to walk.
Once you have gathered a list of what hinders your walking how God would have you to, pray about it. When I say pray, I mean pray, pray, pray, PRAY, pray. You may also need to fast when you pray. Biblical fasting was the consumption of no foods or beverages for a (un)specified period of time. This means taking in no foods or drinks, not just giving up chocolate or sugar (smile).
What causes us to hold on to past hurts? Why would we want to torture ourselves by reliving all of the turmoil and distress? Especially when our lives can be so much more pleasant.
Past hurts can begin to build up in you and cause you to be bitter, unloving and angry. Free yourself from the bondage of anger, bitterness and wrath. Don't hold grudges against those who have wronged you in the past, yet; realize you too were a transgressor needing forgiveness. God sent His only begotten Son into the world to save us from the penalty of our sins. The penalty for sin is death but through the grace of God, we can have redemption.
Those who have wronged you have "sinned" against you in a sort. They may have hurt you, scandalized your name and called you everything but a child of God. Love that person regardless of their words or deeds because you remember the sacrifice made on Mt. Calvary. The same blood that was shed to forgive you of your sins is the same blood that was shed for us to know HOW to extend love, grace, mercy and forgiveness.
Let go of the past and all that hinders you from walking how our Heavenly Father would have you. Let go of the anger. Let go of the wrath. Let go of the hurt. Let go of the tears. Let God keep you. Let God Comfort you. Let the healing being. Don't pull off any scabs. Let old wounds heal. Dress them in ointment and cover them. All the old junk, let it go. Let God heal your heart.
