The wise woman builds her house,
But the foolish pulls it down with her hands.
Proverb 14:1
What does "builds her house" mean? What more can we do to build our homes?
The word build comes from the Hebrew word "banah". It is used 376 times in scripture: build 340, build up 14, builder 10, made 3, built again 2, repair 2, set up 2, have children 1, obtain children 1, surely (inf. for emphasis) 1
So a woman who "builds" her house may literally take a hammer, wood and nails and build. She may also help to establish the family spiritually, to build up the family. Build again or repair spiritually, emotionally, physically. She won't add salt to wounds but ointment and balms - substances to aid in healing. Set up, have children, obtain children...causes her house to continue.
Built again. In order for something to be built again, it will have had to be established and destroyed first. That may be relationships that are broken that a wise woman will re-establish or rebuild. Repairing what has been broken. Again, it may be physical or it may be spiritual, the wise woman builds her house.
The word house comes from the Hebrew word "bayith" which comes from the root word "banah" (see build/banah above). Bayith was used in scripture 2055 times: house 1881, household 54, home 25, within 22, temple 11, prison 16, place 16, family 3, families + <H1> 2, dungeon 2, misc 23.
So, a wise woman builds, establishes, repairs, sets up her: house, household, home, within, temple, prison, place, family, families, dungeon, etc.
Wise women should be concerned with their family’s well being both spiritually and physically. She should be concerned for her own spiritual well being and health as well.
She should be concerned with those imprisoned for the sake of the gospel as well as be a witness to those who don't know Christ. She should be concerned for her brothers and sisters in Christ and pray for their strength and build relationships with them.
There is so much we can pull out of this one verse. Scripture is so rich in wisdom! God is so worthy to be praised. He has given us instruction as to how a wise woman builds her house! How will you be building your house?
But the foolish pulls it down with her hands.
